Lesson Plan #2

For lesson two, what grade do we want to aim for?

Also, are we all focusing on our own cities previously picked?

  1. I think that we should do 3rd grade because they study michigan history. I have decided to do my lesson on having the students collect data on population count for Portage focusing on the years where major historical events took place. They will graph their data and then explain what the graph tells them and why they think the population either increased/decreased based on what they learned from the first lesson.

  2. I think that our entire unit should be for 2nd grade. I think depending on what we decide to do for data collection, that it doesn't necessarily have to coordinate with each of the cities. I have no idea what I'm doing my lesson on yet.

  3. I agree it should be for 2nd grade since we're planning a unit long project. I'm going to do my project on comparing and contrasting the 4 cities. Each student will be given a number of objects to see if it can be found in the cities. Each student that is to become an "expert" on a specified city with research that city only. As a group, they will create a chart/graph to display their findings. We than will discuss the results as a class.

  4. For my lesson, students will gather data from the entire class about which of the 4 museums each student has visited. Students will graph each museum according to the number of students that have visited that museum. This lesson will coordinate with the google map and pen pal assignment as well as the final project, since it will encourage students to recall their own museum experiences.

  6. I'm actually finding my idea to prove a little bit more difficult than I originally thought. My new plan is to have students use maps and measure the distance between each city and compare them. I will also teach them how to use a map key. I want the students to measure the distance in cm (distance across the map) and record it. Then I want them to convert it to miles using the map key. They will be answering questions such as "what is the distance from kalamazoo to grand rapids in cm? in miles?" at the end of the lesson I want them to be able to identify what two cities are the furthest apart and closest together.
